I'm not sure if any of you have heard of the bill H.R. 669 being introduced into the House of Reps., but it's a serious issue.
The full text of the bill can be read here.
Those of you who don't feel like translating that text, this is the summary.
What the bill proposes is in order to protect our wildlife, they want to prohibit the importing and possession of all animals not native to the United States.
The imported animals include most small rodents (mice, gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, etc.), all reptiles, most fish (except the fantail goldfish woohoo), and most bird species (excluding a few type of finches).
If you have any of these now, it's okay, you can keep them. But if this bill gets through, you can forget about owning them in the future.
So I see many problems with this bill. One is how outraged avid pet lovers will be. I know I will. In my room I hold four types of animals that will be banned: mice, cockatiel, lizards, and fish. But I know plenty of people who have pets that will be banned. This is going to devastate millions of people with a love for animals.
Another problem is the economic view. Let's think for a moment. When you walk into Petsmart, what sections are there? There's the dog and cat, fish, bird, reptile, small animal, and horse section. Now, if this bill passes, let's think what Petsmart will look like. Walk in...there's the dog and cat section...and...That's it. Basically, I'm saying that this will devastate the pet supply industry. Inevitably closing thousands of stores across the nation.
So I'm asking for your help, please sign the Care2 petition against this bill. Care2 is a petition site where the petition actually matters. The link the Care2 is here.
Help out, and let's keep our beloved pets.
Thanks for all those who sign.
